Considering that most of my summer plans were cancelled due to COVID, I have had the opportunity to do tons of reading! In effort to get off of my phone/computer before bedtime, I’ve gotten into a great nighttime routine that ends with me enjoying some distraction-free reading time. I’ve been loving all different genres and themes at the moment, too!
Last month, I got to spend lots of time with my boyfriend’s family in New Jersey! His sister runs a fantastic blog where she reviews books from all different genres. While I used to rely primarily on goodreads for book recommendations, I will definitely be turning to her blog for my next reads! Make sure to check out The Reader’s Edit blog for so many amazing book suggestions and reviews!
1) Ask Again, Yes : While I was in New Jersey, my boyfriend’s sister gave me this book to enjoy up in the Cape. Despite not being able to really start it until my flight back to Colorado, I literally couldn’t put it down once I got into it and really fell in love with the story. Ask Again, Yes is a touching story about two neighboring families in a suburban town of New York City. The novel covers 45 years of love, trauma, friendship, and loss, and really examines the weight of family and childhood experiences that we carry with us throughout our entire life.
2) Normal People: Once you start this book, you will not be able to put it down! Normal People tells the story of Connell and Marianne, two characters who meet in grade school and subsequently, despite all effort, cannot stay apart. While their relationship starts as a secretive sexual affair, it grows into an undeniable connection and continued bond. The novel follows both characters through their college years at Trinity College and dives deep into their struggles with identity confusion, self-destruction, and depression. But despite all possibilities, their experiences draw them back together and only bring them closer. This book was just made into a series on Hulu which I am excited to start watching!
3) This is Not a Fashion Story: I have been following Danielle Bernstein on Instagram for a few years now. In 2011, she started her blog called WeWoreWhat that has since evolved into a fashion empire. Today, she is the founder of multiple fashion brands and a non-profit organization. Where my obsession used to solely be with her style, today I am fascinated with her business endeavors. This is Not a Fashion Story takes us through Danielle’s entire life, without leaving out a single detail if you know what I mean! This book was released in May and I pretty much read it in one sitting if that tells you anything about how great it is! A must read for young, aspiring, female business owners.
4) The Dutch House: Set at the end of World War II (my favorite time period for novels), The Dutch House tells the story of Danny and Maeve Conroy who are exiled from their childhood home, nicknamed the ‘The Dutch House.’ The two previously wealthy siblings are thrown into the poverty that their father escaped and have to navigate their future given their unforgettable past. Without giving anything else away, all I can say is that you must read this book!
