Happy Monday! For those of you “my-summer-was-cancelled-because-of-COVID” people, life might be getting a little, I don’t know, boring! I have always loved to read and am grateful that I have continued this habit throughout college. Most often, I enjoy fiction. If it isn’t a historical fiction novel set during World War II, it is the most trashy, gossip-filled book I can get my hands on.
Recently, however, I have discovered some “self-help” books that I have actually really enjoyed. Today I’m sharing four books that I’ve read in quarantine thus far! They range from self-help, to nutrition, to (you know I wouldn’t leave you without one) juicy fiction!
1) The Defining Decade: I first heard about this book a few years ago and was anxious to read it as I approached 20. The time has finally come! I am currently reading this book so can’t speak to it completely yet, but I am really enjoying it so far. It is written by a clinical psychologist whose career was spent working with twenty-year-olds. She tells real-life stories about twenty-year-olds’ work, relationships, social networks, and identities/personalities. She emphasizes the importance of our twenties and gives advise on how to make the most of them.
2) The Husband’s Secret: I love Liane Moriarty’s writing style and am a big fan of her other novels. I don’t need to explain this one too much because it is pretty self explanatory. You can count on this story to give you a dose of drama and gossip that we’ve all been missing out on during quarantine.
3) Girl, Wash Your Face: This was a GREAT read at the start of quarantine. Hollis takes us through her journey as an entrepreneur, debunking 20 lies we tell ourselves every day. Long story short, she says that “you, and only you, are ultimately responsible for how happy you are” and influences her readers to tackle their obstacles and take control of their lives. If you’re feeling unmotivated and frustrated, this one’s for you!
4) Genius Foods: I ordered this book a while ago on Amazon and completely forgot about it. I randomly spotted it on my bookshelf when I got home and read it in a few days. This is a crazy factual book about how food affects our brain. In a sense, this book provides tons of preventative information: what we should be doing now so that we can live healthy, full lives. I would highly recommend this book as, if nothing else, it provides you with a greater awareness of what you’re putting into your body!
